Carol Service
On Tuesday 15th December St Cuthbert Mayne began their Christmas Celebrations with our annual carol service at St Mary the Virgin Church, St Marychurch. The theme this year was to remember to keep the Christ Child central in our thoughts and prayers at Christmas.
Like Charles Dickens' character Scrooge, we thought about Christmas past, present and Christmas yet to come. Students and staff contributed through music, drama, readings and prayer. We were also thrilled to have our carols accompanied by members of the Riviera Concert Brass. It was, as always, an inspirational way to welcome this holy season.
God Bless.

Carnegie Shadowing Event
On Thursday 25th June, 5 students (Richeldis Cain and Stephanie Pugh from Year 8, Joel Yalland from Year 10, Tom Churchward from Year 11 and Dan Masters from Year 12) took part in the Carnegie Shadowing Event held at Paignton Community and Sports College. They were accompanied by Ms McNicoll and Mrs Hamlet. The purpose of the event was to interpret the plot of one of 6 books shortlisted for this year's Carnegie Award.
The book allocated to us by Torbay Schools Library Service was 'Ostrich Boys' by Keith Gray. Our students, the same ones that also took part last year, have a reputation among the other schools taking part of presenting the plot in a light-hearted and amusing way, and this year was no exception. The audience of students and teachers from about 10 other local secondary schools were very appreciative!

St Cuthbert Mayne visit to Exeter Cathedral Thursday 5th February 2009
St Cuthbert Mayne Year 13s would like to pass on their thanks to the Diocesan Youth team and the staff of Exeter Cathedral for making the day for reflection possible on Thursday 5th February. During the day, students were able to use the calm and space in the wonderful surroundings of Exeter Cathedral. The prayers, advice and input of a team of people, particularly Martin Thompson, was hugely valued.
The aim of the day was a simple one – to feel better about ourselves; the focus for the day was God’s love, shown in how He feels about each one of us, individually.
How do we see He loves us: In a nutshell, food, a silly game, God’s word and quiet reflection. A timely reminder after the stress of exams.

Books for Schools from The Times & Sunday Times
A Free Books for Schools scheme begins in the new year. Tokens can be collected from The Times and The Sunday Times from January 11, handed in to the Library, and our school can use them to claim free books from a list of 170 great titles compiled by Times Newspapers and Scholastic Book Clubs. We'll be asking local businesses to help collect for schools in our area, too, so with 12 tokens printed every week and books available from just 10 tokens, it won't take long to fill our library shelves with some great new titles!
Please remember to collect the Tokens and pass them either to Mrs Colman (Student Services) or Mrs Hamlet (Library).
Thank you.

MDL MARINAS, SOUTHAMPTON BOATSHOW AND OUR OWN ELLEN MACARTHUR!
Summer Carmel, Year 10, will become crew on a 70ft yacht next August after winning one of only six prestigious places, nationwide, in a challenging competition.
The competition, run by MDL Marinas set tasks and challenges to find the top 6 exceptional young people in the country and with an interview process thrown in the winners had to be adept at all levels of interaction and focus, Summer proving she’s got what it takes!
The awards ceremony took place at Southampton Boatshow where Summer, her parents and a representative from school were treated to a VIP day at this outstanding event. The six crew members met for the first time to be presented with their coveted trophies. (see picture)
The weather added to the splendour and Summer was allowed on board most of the yachts! Sadly, the £30 million yacht was by appointment only!
Well done Summer! We look forward to hearing all about your journey next August. Congratulations!

Sylvie made the top ten in GCSE Art and Design out of 36294 candidates. Both students are continuing their studies at St Cuthbert Mayne 6th Form. The girls were pleased to have their achievement recognised by a congratulatory letter from Jerry Jarvis, Edexcel’s Managing Director. Headteacher Cathy Gilfillan said: “This is a tremendous achievement and testament to the hard work of the students and their teachers. We are immensely proud of them.”

Stuart Gibson
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Mr Stuart Gibson. Stuart taught here for over 28years and was an inspiration to all students and colleagues who were influenced by him serving the school in the P.E dept, R.E dept, English and Drama and as a School Governor.
We would like all of the school community to remember his family and friends at this difficult time.
There will be a Requiem Mass at Sacred Heart R.C Church, Cecil Road at 10.30am on July 11th.

Successful Students Sail Away with HSBC
Four top St Cuthbert Mayne students received a surprise award when the school nominated them for a sailing course fully funded by HSBC. They attended the 5 day HSBC Sailing Academy aboard 72 ft Challenger yachts based in Portsmouth. The students worked towards the RYA Competent Crew qualification, developing skills such as team-working, leadership and communication as well as sailing skills. Headteacher, Cathy Gilfillan, said it was fantastic to be able to recognise outstanding effort and achievement throughout the year with such an amazing prize. “We were invited to nominate four 14-15 year old students and jumped at the opportunity to reward those who had received the highest number of merits in Years 9 and 10. Thank you to HSBC for making this once in a lifetime experience possible.” The lucky students were Paulina Suszczynska , Andrew Baldwin in Year 9 and Octavia Gale- Cooper and Matthew Hewson in Year 10.
Pictured on one of the yachts in their HSBC sailing gear are Taz Gale-Cooper and Matthew Hewson.

431st Anniversary of St Cuthbert Mayne
431st anniversary of St Cuthbert Mayne
On Sunday 8th June we visited Launceston in Cornwall to take part in a pilgrimage to honour our Patron, St Cuthbert Mayne. This special pilgrimage occurs every three years and attracts pilgrims from across the country who gather to celebrate Mass and visit the place of St Cuthbert Mayne’s arrest and martyrdom.
Mass was celebrated by Bishop Christopher Budd in the Town Hall. We then went on to Launceston Castle where St Cuthbert Mayne was arrested and held prisoner and the Town square where he was martyred. Later, back at the church dedicated to St Cuthbert Mayne the relic of St Cuthbert Mayne was displayed.

Work Experience Week 2008 Monday 12th – Friday 16th May 2008
Well done to all of the Year 10’s who took part in a very successful Work Experience week. As always, without the support of our local business and education community, work experience would be unachievable – and it is to this end that I would like to thank all the local support given to our school and the rewards they brought.
Now that the project has been monitored and analysed, it has shown that the majority of students who took part were very happy with the week’s events. This shows the excellent calibre of our Year 10 students who worked hard from day one to secure placements and get the best out of the experience – I am happy to say, this paid dividends.
Well done again Year 10

COBRAS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS!
The School is celebrating the success of our U15 girls Basketball team for winning the ESBBA U15 Jubilee Cup Final.
Played at the magnificent Nottingham Jesse Boot Wildcats Arena on Sunday 11th May our Cobras team challenged by Downham Market High School from Norfolk recorded an impressive victory.
Our girls played some of their best team basketball in this end of season contest to win convincingly by 72 – 43.
Powerful performances from twins Louisa and Maz Etherson, Summer Carmel, Georgia Pugh and April Richards ensured a steady flow of points throughout the match. With real depth in the team Lauren Fitzpatrick, Taz Gale – Cooper (Captain), Heather Barratt, Nicole Veale and Briony Martin all played major parts in the team’s success.
The reward of winning this National title follows a long season of dedicated training and some very tough games in the South West Region.
Congratulations to the team!

Authors' Visit to School 22nd and 23rd May
The 2 Steves
Our visiting authors this year are the very funny ‘2 Steves’ who have written many books, including the Mad Myths series, Star Bores and Dragonsdale. They will be performing their ‘Mad Myths’ show for students in Years 5 and 6 from our neighbouring primary schools on Thursday 22nd May, and talking to our Year 7 and 8 students on Friday 23rd May. The books, mentioned above, can be bought now from the School Library and then signed by the authors when they are in school.
Steve Barlow was born in Britain (in Crewe, in the county of Cheshire). He went to Brierley Street School, which was like Bash Street only not as sophisticated, then to Crewe County Grammar School for Boys (and what kind of school feels the need, in its name, to remind its pupils what gender they are? Hmmm?). He went on to study at Warwick University and Nottingham University, and worked at various times as a teacher, actor, stage manager and puppeteer. Then he went to teach in Botswana, where a valid excuse for students not handing in their homework was 'A goat ate it, sir!'. On his return to the UK he met Steve Skidmore, and the rest is hysteria. Steve Barlow lives in Somerset with his wife Cathy, daughter Amy and son Robbie. He likes walking, sailing, reading, listening to music and shouting at politicians on the telly.
Steve Skidmore is shorter than Steve Barlow and less hairy. He was born in Birstall near Leicester in England. After managing to pass some exams at school, he went on to Nottingham University to supposedly read English, but spent most of his time playing sport and doing a variety of summer jobs including counting pastry pie lids (yes, really). He trained as a teacher of Drama, English and Film studies, before teaming up with Steve Barlow to become a full time author. He lives in Leicester and is a great rugby fan (he supports Leicester Tigers - "Come on you Tiiiiigeeeers!").

Hormones And Harmony
Once again a most successful and enjoyable course for Years 7,8 + 9, parents ran in the Spring term for 7 weeks. The topics discussed in each workshop covered:
What is it like being a teenager, styles of parenting, communication, managing disagreements, concerns about sex problems and conflict.
All the parents who took part found the course most helpful, enjoyable and useful. In fact they all said it was too short and they would have liked more!
I look forward to running another course for parents in 2009/10 and thank Mr. Lester Yeo from Patchwork for leading and facilitating the group.

EASTER SERVICES WEDNESDAY 19th MARCH
LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU.
On Wednesday the whole school celebrated Easter. The theme of the worship was Jesus' command that we love each other. It was a prayerful service which journeyed through the crucifixion of Christ on Good Friday to the joy of the resurrection experienced on Easter Sunday. Many students participated through readings, drama, prayers and music. It was a special way to focus our thoughts as we left school for the Easter weekend. Thanks go to all involved especially to our new Chaplain Mr James who coordinated it all.

French Trip
40 students from year 10 French, year 9 and year 8 took part in the French trip to Normandy for 5 days in February 2008.
Although the ferry journey was rather long we greatly enjoyed our stay in a PGL centre and visited amazing places such as Mont St Michel, the American cemetary, the Bayeux Tapestry…
The students also took part in activities in the centre and enjoyed discos, scavenger hunts and mini-olympiades in the evening.
Well done to all the students who were well behaved and we hope to go back to France next year to spend a week in Paris with the Year 10s opting for French.
Ms B.Taverna
It was around 3:45am on Monday morning. It was freezing cold and dark. The coach trip took us around 3 and half hours to reach Portsmouth port.
When we got on the ferry it seemed like an indoor shopping centre. On the ferry we all had a reserved lounge for us to stay in during the journey. There were some shops on board for buying gifts and souvenirs. It took 6 and half long boring hours to arrive in Caen (France). From there it took 2 hours to get to our PGL centre, Château du Tertre.
As we unloaded we were shown to our dormitories and we chose who was going to stay in our rooms. It was teatime and we were all called to the dinner hall where we had our meals. Every day up until Friday we were supplied with breakfast and dinner. We were also given packed lunches when we went on day trips away from the centre.
On Tuesday we visited French schools. The year 10s went to one and the rest went to another. We had a guided tour by the Head Teacher of the school. We were split up into 5 groups and were sent to various lessons. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
When we got back to the Chateau we were split into 4 groups for 4 different activities. The choices were archery, challenge course, leap of faith and absailing.
On Wednesday we went to the American War Cemetery. We looked around the Cemetery and it was very moving but at the same time it was an amazing place. The grass was immaculate and every one of the gravestones was shiny and clean. Next we went to a 360-degree cinema where we watched a clip from World War 2.
On Thursday afternoon we visited Mont St. Michel, where we looked around the Abbey and the Mont itself. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day!
On the last day we went to 2 shopping centres, Decathlon and a hypermarket called Carrefour. After that we headed for home where our relatives greeted us.
By Luke Moss and Ryan Harris.

The Kids' Lit Quiz!
The Kids' Lit Quiz
Two teams from Years 7 & 8 at St. Cuthbert Mayne School took part in this year’s South West Heat of the Kids’ Lit Quiz, which was held recently in Wadebridge, Cornwall. Our students competed against 33 other teams from all over the South West in the literary quiz, which lasted more than two hours. Teams of four students worked together to answer 100 wide-ranging literary questions covering 10 different subjects, ranging from Aliases to Anatomy. Our teams consisted of Chloe Pope, Clara Lovell, Olivia Dimeck, Lily Newman, Harry Knight, Joseph Murphy, Joe Kerbyson and David Dorean-Mitchell.
Our students were well prepared, having read a wide range of books, and came well up in the results, although they were not the overall winners. Well done to them all! We will certainly try again next year.

FAIRTRADE DAY SUPPORTS CAFOD - Friday 5 October 2007
Year 11 students enjoyed a Citizenship and Enterprise day focusing on Fairtrade. The day involved educational activities which enabled the students to experience the hardship many third world farmers experience on a daily basis and how important Fairtrade is to these people, and how much we take for granted.
The day was run in conjunction with CAFOD which highlights the difficulties of people in third world countries who require financial support in order for them to improve their lives and make better choices.
They also had the opportunity to run a Fairtrade Café and breaktime and lunchtime – which was very successful. The products were Fairtrade such as chocolate, bags, milkshakes etc and for every item sold 5p was donated to CAFOD – the total raised from this on the day was £37.00 – an amazing amount.
We are looking into the possibility of running a Fairtrade Café every so often in order to raise money to support CAFOD, so watch this space!
Well done Year 11!

Open Day 2007
Open Day at St Cuthbert Mayne School was a great success. It was a pleasure to meet so many prospective students and their parents. Prefects and Year 8 students acted as guides for our visitors, answering a whole host of questions during the itinerary around school. Many of the guides commented on how rewarding they found the experience whilst evaluations completed by parents complimented students on how well they represented St Cuthbert Mayne. Our younger visitors enjoyed the displays of work and the opportunities to participate in several activities within the subject areas.

Year 11 Leavers Service
Goodbye and Hello – A Celebration of experiences 2001-2007
The 16th of May was a day to remember for our community as Year 11 were about to leave us to begin their Study Leave.
Lunch was an early event in the canteen and then the students joined Mr Bald and many staff in the hall for a truly memorable presentation. Mr Bald had brought together a multitude of photographs and images of the students over the years, (which was complemented with backing music). It was clear to see how much this was enjoyed and there was a tremendous amount of laughter … and a few tears too! Mr Hammond made some special awards to his footballers, which also went down a storm!
The students then helped to set up the hall for their formal Leavers’ Service and their parents and guardians joined them at 2 pm.
Mrs Gilfillan opened the service with a welcome to the students and parents. This was followed by an opening prayer from 11YG’s Michael Cheyne.
Jade Johnson then treated all the students and parents to a breathtaking rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’.
The Tutors’ Address then followed ~ Mrs Fuller and Mr Jefferey’s reading encouraged students to take-up every opportunity that life would bring them. Mr Davis and Mrs Calouri gave us the wonderful adaptation of ‘Our Deepest Fears’ by Nelson Mandela. Mr Tindal shared with us the wonder of life’s ‘golden moments’ and Mrs Glindon spoke about her special tribute to the students during exams where she placed a small glass bead into a bowl with a burning candle to act as a living prayer for all of them, who, like the glass beads, were all individual.
Mr Bald then spoke about the importance of maintaining your own unique ‘personality’ and he thanked parents and guardians for their support over the years. A sincere thank you was given to ‘all’ the staff at the school with special mentions to Mrs Fuller and Mrs Carpenter who will be leaving us this year. Mr Bald then spoke about the amazing talents that the students have and how this was not a goodbye but a hello to the rest of their life. He then showed a tribute to the students using their Year 7 tutor group photographs and similar photographs from Year 11 accompanied by the song ‘Goodbye and Hello’.
Natalie Hamling and Sarah George then played their own amazing composition, which was enjoyed by everyone.
Year 11 students were then presented with their Progress Files, which contained a personal letter from Mr Bald. Mrs Coleman also presented each student with a small cross on behalf of the community at St Cuthbert Mayne.
The Head Girl, Rachel Murphy and Head Boy, Iain Dummett – together with the Deputy Head Girl, Sarah George and Deputy Head Boy, Callum Nicholls gave a vote of thanks and presented Mr Bald with a beautiful photo album containing fantastic pictures and wonderful messages form the Year 11 students and a lovely painting by Natasha Fountain.
Mrs Fuller had been given a special presentation by her own students at the start of the day – a fantastic t-shirt with photos and messages from her tutor group on it. She was also presented with a painting from Natasha to thank her for being such a star over the years.
The concluding prayer was given by Mrs Gilfillan, which was followed by an outstanding musical finale led by Suzannah O’Neill and Holly Long with backing harmonies from Sammy Amery, Michell O,Callaghan, Jess Wagstaff Carolyn Julian and Jade Johnson.
Mr Bald then concluded by asking the students to ‘raise the roof’, which they duly did, in a final ‘Year 11 cheer’
Callum Nicholls played us out with his award-winning version of ‘Your Song’ and then students, parents and staff enjoyed the refreshments, courtesy of Mrs Blenkinsopp on behalf of the PTA.
The Year 11s are now looking forward to their big celebration at the end of their exams, on the 29th June at Oldway Mansion - the Summer Ball promises to be a night to remember for us all.

Bali Rai
A visit from the award-winning children’s author, Bali Rai, has been arranged for Monday, 25th June 2007. His famous books include his first novel “(UN)ARRANGED MARRIAGE”, published in 2001, which is now cult young adult reading. Leicester born and bred, Bali is already established as a distinctive voice in young adult fiction. His books have been translated into 10 languages and have won many awards. He has been invited all over the world to talk about his writing. Bali Rai will talk about books that have pushed the boundaries in literature for young people – his own and others. How do books challenge literary norms and who are they for anyway? His talk will look at the audience for such books and the reasons why pushing back the boundaries is so important in these challenging times.

School Mission Week 10th - 16th March
School Mission “Bring it on, bring them back” - One Week to Go!
The school mission will be led by members of the Sion Community and we are pleased that Mrs Bryden has agreed to return to the school to co-ordinate the event. The title focuses on our need to turn back to God our Father. In some ways we have become ‘missing persons’; we have wandered off the pathway that leads directly into his loving arms. This mission will give us all an experience of God’s love and bring us back to become once again the living stones of the St Cuthbert Mayne community. Visit www.sionyouth.org.youth to find out more about the Sion Community and their work. There will be an evening event for all members of the school community on Thursday 15th March (after the Year 9 Options Evening). Please mark this date in your diary and join us then.
If you are able to host one or more of the Sion Community visitors 8 – 16 March please leave a message for Mrs Bryden with Amelia Brown on Reception.
