St Cuthbert Mayne
Joint Catholic and Church of England School

Welcome to St Cuthbert Mayne School

St Cuthbert Mayne School was founded on the assumption that parents specifically choose the School because they wish their child to be educated within the Christian belief and practice of the Catholic and Anglican churches.

St Cuthbert Mayne School has a unique place in the history of the English education system. It was the first Joint Catholic and Church of England Comprehensive School in Britain. As a Joint Church School we are proud of this achievement and we have an exciting future.

Schools are communities of young people with gifts and talents. Each child is a unique and precious individual with a role to play in the School community.

Our aims as a School are:
● to develop each young person to their full potential within a Christian environment
● to help each young person, whatever their ability, to achieve the highest academic standards possible
● to encourage high standards of personal responsibility and develop an awareness and concern for others
● to provide each young person with the knowledge, skills and values that will enable them to play their part in the world

A strong academic tradition has been established offering a full range of GCSE,AS and A2 Level, NVQ and AVCE courses for 1000 students of all abilities between the ages of 11 and 18. Students are provided with challenge and support as appropriate. This is reflected in our tradition of academic success.

The successful pastoral system is built on the strong partnership between the school and home enabling each student to flourish. We believe that parents have a key role to play in the education of their child. Close parental links with the tutor and Head of Year are an essential ingredient of our success as a School.

Religious Education is at the core of our curriculum, and daily worship is an integral part of the life of our community. As a Church School we are privileged to have the support of our parishes and especially our School Chaplains.

Extra-curricular activities are an essential part of a young person’s development and all students are encouraged to profit from the wide range of activities on offer. Whatever their talents and abilities there are opportunities to excel. In addition there are numerous visits, residentials, fieldwork, exchanges and outward bound activities which enhance a rich curriculum.

Well-equipped specialist facilities are provided for all areas of the curriculum. The School has undergone a major expansion to provide a new Sixth Form Centre and an enlarged Library and Resources Centre. In June 2004 a major building programme was completed providing the school with a new teaching block, a new Sports Hall and new Music and Drama Suite. In addition there is a major refurbishment programme for the existing
facilities.
This is an exciting time to join the school, with its new facilities, tradition of pastoral care and ever-improving academic achievement. St Cuthbert Mayne School – “A tradition of caring and excellence”
